Tradescantia pallida – Purple Heart “Mora” (Small)
Adopted
“PurpleHeart” is one of those plants that instantly catches the eye. When I first saw it in Baltimore, the colors were striking, but when I moved to Florida, the sunshine brought out an even deeper purple that was just incredible. The Florida sun gave it this bold, saturated tone that felt almost unreal. Usually, I keep my plants in terracotta, but for this one I made an exception—set against a white pot, its purple foliage shines even brighter. It’s a plant that feels alive with color and energy, always surprising me with how vivid it can be.
Tradescantia pallida, known as Purple Heart or Purple Queen, is native to northeastern Mexico. It’s loved worldwide for its vibrant purple leaves, trailing habit, and small pink flowers that add a delicate contrast. Outdoors in full sun, its purple tones intensify, while in shade it may take on more green. Hardy and adaptable, Purple Heart is drought-tolerant once established, forgiving of tough conditions, and an excellent ground cover in warm climates. Whether planted in the garden or kept in containers, it remains one of the most striking and easy-to-love foliage plants.
