Plumeria rubra – Frangipani “Pua Melia” (Large)

Adopted

I first experienced Plumeria rubra (Frangipani) while living in Hawai‘i—its vibrant colors and unforgettable fragrance were everywhere. Though not native to the islands, plumeria has become beloved there, often used in making lei as a symbol of welcome, love, and friendship. There it’s called Pua Melia—“pua” means flower. The plant was introduced to Hawai‘i in the late 1800s, brought from Mexico and Central America by botanists and missionaries. Over time, it became woven into island culture, especially in lei-making, where its blossoms came to embody aloha spirit, love, and friendship.

Many years later, after moving to Florida, I caught that same fragrance again and was instantly transported back to those memories. I picked up this plant at Mounts Botanical Garden, and it has been thriving since. While it hasn’t flowered yet, its steady growth brings anticipation. Plumeria are known to grow more slowly in their early years, putting energy into establishing roots and strong stems before they burst into blooms. This one is taking its time, but every new leaf feels like a promise of flowers to come.
