Monstera deliciosa – Swiss Cheese Plant “Carmen Sandiego” (XL)

Adopted

“Carmen Sandiego” is my Monstera deliciosa, grown entirely in water from a simple cutting that rooted and flourished in our South Florida bedroom. The mother is OG Sulley. Where in the World will you find a plant standing about 3 feet tall (91 cm), with leaves stretching nearly 20 inches long (51 cm) and about 14 inches wide (36 cm)? The fenestrated foliage is gorgeous—when sunlight pours through the window, the leaf holes scatter light into patterned shadows across the room, creating a living play of shade and brightness.

What makes Carmen Sandiego special is its flexibility. Kept in water, it remains vibrant as long as the water is refreshed weekly. It can be displayed upright, or angled slightly so its leaves act as a natural screen, creating shade with their dramatic silhouettes. Monstera deliciosa, native to the tropical forests of Central America, is celebrated for these qualities: its bold split leaves, climbing roots, and ability to adapt indoors. Even in this hydroponic form, it feels like a statement piece—living architecture within the bedroom.

When the time comes, this Monstera can be transitioned from water to soil, where it will continue to root deeply and grow even larger.

Homeage to the big red brim hat Carmen Sandeigo wears with style.
