Kalanchoe thyrsiflora – Flapjack “Paleta”
Adopted
Kalanchoe thyrsiflora, known as the Flapjack or Paddle Plant, is a striking succulent that combines simplicity with bold form. Its broad, rounded leaves layer like a stack of coins or sunlit paddles, catching light along their edges. In bright sun, those edges flush a deep coral-red, contrasting beautifully against the plant’s powdery blue-green center. It’s the kind of plant that feels alive with movement even when perfectly still.
Native to South Africa, this species is part of the Crassulaceae family and thrives in full sun to bright, indirect light. Often mistaken for its close relative Kalanchoe luciae, this species has thicker leaves and a paler tone, with smaller, tightly packed flower clusters. Mature plants send up a tall bloom stalk from the rosette, covered in yellow, bell-shaped flowers that attract pollinators. After flowering, it produces offsets around the base, continuing its quiet, rhythmic cycle of renewal. Hardy, architectural, and forgiving, it’s an ideal plant for bright windows or sunny patios.
