Epiphyllum oxypetalum – Queen of the Night “Layla”
Adopted
This plant was a gift from Adriana, whom I met during a local plant sale—she picked up a Sansevieria cylindrica, and we ended up exchanging stories about our collections. She later shared a cutting of this one with me, and it’s easily one of the most captivating gifts I’ve received. There’s something poetic about how plant exchanges connect people—one day you’re talking about light and soil, and the next, you’re both part of each other’s gardens in quiet, growing ways.
Epiphyllum oxypetalum, commonly known as the Queen of the Night, is a tropical cactus admired for its spectacular nocturnal blooms. The large, white flowers open only once at night—fragrant and fleeting, often lasting just a few hours before closing with the sunrise. Native to Central America and parts of Asia, it grows epiphytically, clinging to trees and absorbing moisture from the air. Its long, flattened stems give it a sculptural form even when not in bloom, and when those rare flowers appear, they’re nothing short of breathtaking. It’s a plant that rewards patience with pure magic.
