Cordyline fruticosa – Hawaiian Ti “IkaIka” (Small)

Near where I live, there was once a patch of Hawaiian Ti that landscapers had cut down. Among the remains, I noticed one weakened branch and a Dragon Tree whom later I named “Yamato-hō 大和砲” along with “Baby Finger”, nearly gone. I trimmed it back, took what I could salvage, and decided to give it a chance. For months it seemed uncertain, but little by little it began to recover, pushing out new life. That journey of survival is why I call it “IkaIka,” the Hawaiian word for strong. The Force, it seems, was strong in this one.

Cordyline fruticosa, better known as Hawaiian Ti, carries stories just as rich as its colorful leaves. In Polynesian and Hawaiian tradition, Ti has long been a plant of protection, luck, and spiritual strength. Families planted it near homes and temples to guard against negativity, while its broad leaves were woven into hula skirts, leis, and even used to wrap food. To many, Hawaiian Ti represents vitality and blessing, a living thread that ties daily life to ceremony. Growing “IkaIka” is more than tending a plant—it’s keeping alive a piece of history, culture, and the reminder that strength often shows up when least expected.
