I found this thunderbolt-shaped wonder growing near a nursery in Sykesville, Maryland—striking straight up from the ground like it had cracked through the earth itself. Unlike the full, bushy Pencil Cactus types you often see, this one grows with wide spacing between branches, giving it a lightning-strike silhouette. I’ve tried to track down its exact variation with no success—so for now, it remains a beautiful mystery. What I do know is: it grows fast, wild, and with a kind of sculptural defiance that’s thrilling to watch.
