Aloiampelos ciliaris – Climbing Aloe – “OG Octavius” (XL)

Adopted

Aloiampelos ciliaris, better known as Climbing Aloe, first caught my eye in a small nursery in Baltimore, Maryland. It was a curious little plant—thin, upright, and reaching for support. I’d never seen an aloe that climbed, so I brought it home. Years later, in Florida’s warmth, it transformed completely. Instead of growing tall and straight, it spilled out in every direction, like a living octopus stretching its arms across the sun. That wild form has made it one of my favorites.

This plant is endlessly fun—easy to propagate, adaptable to different conditions, and remarkably resilient. In cooler climates it tends to stay more vertical, but here in Florida, it turned into a sprawling sculpture. I admire its tenacity and its versatility: a plant that can climb, hang, or sprawl, depending on where it lands. To me, it’s proof that some plants have personalities as bold as their forms.
