trifasciata

Commonly known as the Snake Plant or Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, Sansevieria trifasciata originates from West Africa, especially Nigeria and the Congo. In the wild, it grows upright through rocky, dry soils, adapting to intense sun and long dry periods. That toughness carried into homes worldwide, where it quickly became one of the most recognizable and beloved houseplants within the larger Sansevieria family.

What makes trifasciata unique is its sword-shaped leaves: tall, flat, and marked with dark green bands crossed by lighter stripes, often rimmed with gold in cultivars like Laurentii. Unlike cylindrical or compact Sansevierias, trifasciata defines itself with vertical height and sharp architectural form. Easygoing yet striking, it remains a timeless favorite—valued for resilience, cultural symbolism of strength and protection, and air-purifying qualities.
